Abstract

The paper describes the collection and presentation of Icelandic lexicographic material in bilingual Icelandic dictionaries, especially where Icelandic plays the role of the source language. The composition of the Icelandic lemma list is discussed where the lack of semantic analysis and classification has made it difficult to detect internal relations and to concentrate on words and phrases belonging to a specific concept or semantic field. Here the lexicographic description of Icelandic can benefit from a comprehensive analysis and presentation of the structural and semantic relations of the Icelandic vocabulary as found in the project Íslenskt orðanet. On the basis of a large collection of collocations the patterns of use reveal the interaction of semantic and syntactic relations, building groups of semantically coherent words and phrases. In accordance with the condition of monosemic lemmas the lemma list of Íslenskt orðanet mainly consists of multi-word units, showing structural behavior of the lexical elements involved.

Sorting and classification of such lexicographic material which has gone through a proactive analysis, together with corpus evidence, will improve the usefulness of new bilingual Icelandic dictionaries in the future.
